First day back at school.
Slowly back into it today. The morning in a year 4 class – with a view to it being regular until half-term (when Chris and Jenn are coming to visit – which reminds me I need to ask them to bring their shredder even if it’s not a cross cut).
Back into the swing of it, with the same trousers which I love (M&S) and new shoes which I’m not entirely sure about and a shirt. Back into going with the flow and dealing with issues as they come along. Children who’ve finished all the work the teacher has set and others that are stuck or that lack the confidence to have a go at the task. Working things through and working things out. Getting them started, letting them carry on, giving them targets. Asking them whether they think that’s really enough and them turning around and coming back 5 minutes later with it actually finished. Mispronouncing names, forgetting others, others still where you cycle through the choices in your head, getting names wrong and wondering why they’re ignoring you. Constantly looking up when working with someone, scanning the room, deciding if it’s worth it to engage, how ‘on task’ is enough. Making eye contact with raised eyebrows or a shake of the head or saying their name and doing the same. Stopping the class and discussing what their doing, raising a point you know some children are struggling with. Asking others to explain why they think that. Laughing. Saying “right” at some more interesting answers and moving on. Being ignored, having your words repeated. Taking a breath and considering your options. Picking up rulers, sorting out sheets.
I’ve made lots of choices and really do feel like I’ll be forever working things out. That I’m here but not entirely sure how I got here. Regardless, I’m truely glad I chose teaching.

Awesome. We’ve booked leave for half term – will probably be the beginning of it if that’s ok? Will bring shredder. Sorry it’s not a cross-cut.
(N.B. In the absence of a shredder, Chris helpfully suggests that you try ripping.)
If I’m honest, your job sounds quite hard. Glad it makes you happy though.
